Flow state

Definition

Flow State is a concept associated with Mihaly Csikszentmihalyi. It describes deep absorption in an activity, sometimes with a changed sense of time and satisfaction. Flow does not imply a universal two-to-fivefold increase in productivity.

Claims about productivity
A widely repeated McKinsey account of executives’ experience of flow is not a controlled proof that everyone becomes 500% more productive. More time in flow does not by itself guarantee that weekly output will double.

Conditions that may support flow

  • A fit between challenge and skill — a task that is demanding but manageable
  • Clear goals — you know what you are trying to do
  • Immediate feedback — you can see the effects of your actions
  • Fewer distractions — attention to the activity
  • Intrinsic motivation — the activity itself is rewarding
