Executive functions

What are executive functions?

Executive functions are cognitive skills often described in terms of working memory, cognitive flexibility and inhibitory control. They contribute to following instructions, planning, organising and regulating actions. Several interacting brain systems are involved; these skills cannot be reduced to one region or a single test.

No fixed rate

there is no single age at which everyone’s executive functions finish developing

No fixed rate

development does not follow one fixed delay for everyone with ADHD

No fixed rate

group findings do not determine an individual developmental age

Three commonly described components

Working memory

Holding information in mind while carrying out a task

  • Following multi-step instructions
  • Mental arithmetic
  • Keeping track of a conversation

Cognitive flexibility

Switching tasks or adapting to changes

  • Switching between projects
  • Adapting to new rules
  • Considering different perspectives

Executive-function development

Examples of developing skills, not fixed diagnostic milestones

3-7Learning basic self-regulation and rules
7-12Developing working memory and planning
12-18Developing abstract thought and more complex planning
18-25Continued development into young adulthood, with individual variation
ADHD and development
Developmental patterns vary among people with ADHD. Group averages cannot be used to assign an individual a fixed developmental delay or promise that difficulties disappear at a particular age.

Can support and practice help?

Strategies and external supports can make particular tasks more manageable. Practising a skill does not guarantee broad improvement in executive functions or treatment of ADHD:

  1. Cognitive practice — improvement on a practised exercise may not transfer to daily life
  2. Physical activity — suitable activity can support wellbeing without a guaranteed brain-function effect
  3. Meditation — an optional attention practice, not a substitute for care
  4. Structured routines — familiar sequences may reduce the need to make repeated decisions
  5. External tools — calendars, reminders and task lists

Using Sinqly as organisational support

  • External records — record chosen actions and goals
  • Structured planning — identify manageable steps yourself
  • Reminders — choose suitable cues outside the app if needed; no treatment effect is promised
  • Visible progress — review recorded actions without treating them as a clinical measure
