Eisenhower matrix: task prioritisation
Definition
Eisenhower matrix is a prioritisation tool named after US president Dwight Eisenhower. It classifies tasks by two dimensions, importance and urgency, creating four quadrants. The name does not mean every task has one objectively correct category.
quadrants for considering tasks
review how many tasks feel urgent but less important
make room for important work before it becomes urgent
The four quadrants
- Q1: important and urgent — crises and deadlines: consider doing these first
- Q2: important, not urgent — strategy, learning and health: schedule time
- Q3: less important, urgent — requests and calls: consider delegation where appropriate
- Q4: less important, not urgent — optional distractions: consider reducing them
Q2 is a place to consider habits, learning, strategic work and health before they become urgent. These tasks can be easy to postpone. Classify tasks yourself and review their context; automatic quadrant classification or balancing by an AI coach is not promised here.
Using it day to day
List your tasks and consider their quadrant. Address urgent important work, schedule other important tasks, and review what can be delegated or dropped. The free matrix tool can help lay out this decision; responsibility for priorities remains yours.
