Hours and minutes: why 1.30 hours is not 1 hour 30 minutes

How to convert minutes to decimal hours, add durations and calculate an interval across midnight without mixing up formats. A table and worked examples.

Illustration for the Hours and Minutes Calculator

First establish what the notation means

A spreadsheet says “1.30”, a note says “1:30”, and a clock reads 01:30. Similar notation can mean different things. If you mistake a decimal fraction for hours and minutes, the error will recur in every row and distort the overall plan.

Three meanings of similar notation
  1. 1:30 — a duration

One hour and 30 minutes, if the source uses hours:minutes format. A total of 90 minutes.

  2. 1.30 hours — a number

One whole hour and 0.30 of an hour. Multiply the fractional part by 60 to get 18 minutes. A total of 78 minutes.

  3. 01:30 — a time of day

A clock reading. To find a duration, you need a start, an end and the dates they fall on.

A point alone does not establish the format. In one source, “1.30” means decimal hours; in another, it means one hour and thirty minutes. Before importing or calculating, check the column heading and the program’s conventions. In the Sinqly calculator, a point or comma indicates a decimal fraction; a colon separates hours and minutes.

How to convert minutes to hours and back

One hour contains 60 minutes. Divide minutes by 60 to obtain decimal hours. Multiply decimal hours by 60 to convert back to minutes. For example: 135 ÷ 60 = 2.25 hours; 2.25 × 60 = 135 minutes.

Three ways to write the same duration
MinutesHours:minutesDecimal hours
150:150,25
300:300,5
450:450,75
781:181,3
901:301,5
1352:152,25

For hours:minutes notation, first find the whole hours, then the remaining minutes. There are two whole hours in 135 minutes: 2 × 60 = 120. That leaves 15 minutes. The result is therefore 2:15, not 2:25.

For your own number, open the hours and minutes calculator (in Russian) and choose “Convert hours and minutes”. It shows minutes, decimal hours and hours:minutes notation together.

  1. In the calculator, choose “Convert hours and minutes”.
  2. Enter 1.30 and choose “Decimal hours” as the input unit.
  3. Compare the three results: 78 minutes, 1:18 and 1.3 hours. To save them, click “Download text”.

Add durations in a single unit

Preparation took 1:30, discussion 0:45 and revisions 0:30. Convert everything to minutes: 90 + 45 + 30 = 165. Then convert back to hours and minutes: 2:45. You cannot add 1.30 + 0.45 + 0.30 as ordinary numbers if the original values were hours and minutes.

One example, two calculations
StepCorrectFormat error
Preparation1:30 → 90 minutes1.30 hours → 78 minutes
Discussion0:45 → 45 minutes0.45 hours → 27 minutes
Revisions0:30 → 30 minutes0.30 hours → 18 minutes
Total165 minutes = 2:45123 minutes = 2:03

The difference in this example is 42 minutes. This follows arithmetically from mixing formats; it is not a statistic about time lost. The same rule applies to subtraction: first convert the values to one unit. For example, 2:00 − 0:45 = 120 − 45 = 75 minutes, or 1:15.

An interval between clock times: remember midnight

From 09:20 to 11:05 on the same day, 105 minutes have passed: from 09:20 to 10:00 is 40 minutes, followed by another hour to 11:00 and 5 minutes to the end. The result is 1:45.

From 23:30 to 01:15 is also 105 minutes if the end falls on the next day: 30 minutes before midnight and another 75 after it. Identical start and end times can have different answers: 0 minutes on the same day, or 24 hours on the next. Make the intended meaning explicit.

If the interval includes a clock change or a change of time zone, clock readings alone are insufficient. You need dates and time zones. The simple interval mode in our calculator does not make that adjustment. For everyday planning, it calculates the difference between clock readings, with an explicit choice of whether the end is on the next day.

A duration longer than a day does not reset

Work accumulated over several days can total 27:30. That means 27 hours 30 minutes, not 3:30. A time of day returns to the start of the next day; an accumulated duration continues to grow.

In Excel, the displayed result depends on the cell format. For totals above 24 hours, Microsoft shows the custom format [h]:mm;@. The square brackets around h display accumulated hours. Apply the format to the total cell and check a simple example: 20:00 + 7:30 should give 27:30. This is an Excel convention, not a universal rule for every program.

Round the total, rather than every row

20 minutes is one third of an hour. If you store it as 0.33 hours, converting back gives 19 minutes 48 seconds. Three such rounded entries give 59 minutes 24 seconds instead of an hour. Where possible, retain the original minutes or seconds, add them and round the total only for display.

In the calculator, hours:minutes notation is rounded to the nearest minute. Decimal values in conversion mode are shown to six decimal places. For pay calculations, timesheets or work standards, use the units and rounding rules agreed in your organization; this article does not define them.

  1. Check whether the unit is stated: minutes, decimal hours or hours:minutes.
  2. Distinguish a duration from a time of day. For an interval, confirm the end date.
  3. Convert every row to one unit, then add or subtract.
  4. Check the result against a familiar value: one and a half hours is 90 minutes.
  5. Retain the original values and state the rounding precision.

More questions to clarify

How many minutes is 1.30 hours?

If the value is in decimal hours, 1.30 × 60 = 78 minutes, or 1 hour 18 minutes. To express one hour and 30 minutes as a duration, use 1:30.

How do I write 2 hours 15 minutes as a decimal?

15 ÷ 60 = 0.25. Add the two whole hours: 2.25 hours.

Can I add up more than 24 hours?

Yes. A duration is not limited to one day. For example, 20:00 + 7:30 = 27:30. In a spreadsheet, check the display format for accumulated hours.
